However, almost six years after her starring role, River has sadly passed away. This gorgeous pup brought the fan-favourite companion to life, not just as a reference for Dogmeat’s appearance, but also his behaviour and shining personality. Dogmeat is for carry weight and sight clearance as much as being effective early with distraction and crippler. It’s no secret that behind the unbreakable loyalty of Fallout 4’s Dogmeat is real-life German Shepherd, River. As I am fond of stating in all Bethesda Games, by 25 a Demi God, by 35 an Avatar of destruction. I do not need a companion to kill anything. Melee companions, unless they are say only a couple feet tall, force you to check your fire a lot. If you give them another weapon you have to provide ammo.

If you give them a better weapon using the same ammo type they use default unless you provide extra ammo. Unless you MOD, the Humanoid Companions have a default weapon with endless ammo. Anything/everything is effective, even OP, on normal.

Finally, which difficulty you play on makes a big difference. A real companion is still much better than Lone Wanderer. Dogmeat can never carry as much as the others. A humanoid companion with good armor and a good sniper type gun will do much better. He cannot do anything but growl at an enemy above you. Which means he gets into a crossfire all the time. With all DLC you can go even better at 4 + 4 + 2. Makes DogMeat vastly more effective than other companions. Lone Wanderer 3 + Attack Dog 3, and Inspirational 2.

Thanks Incunabulum I wll for sure look for Amazing Follower Tweeks as it looks like it should "trick" Dogmeat into being a well manored companion The only time they'd get in front of me was when they thought I was going to give them a treat, or sit and look at me with a painful expression when they had to go outside to deposit a bit of themselves on the lawn. Or get Out of My way - which allows you to push all companions (and everyone else) out of your way.

Seriously though - get Amazing Follower Tweaks and use it to tell Dogmeat to a) stay behind you (his normal AI is to move to the cursor) and b) stay a long way behind you. Have you ever owned a dog? Especially a German Shepherd. It's a habit frustrating enough to perhaps leave him behind even though he can be an asset. Originally posted by American Rider:For maintaining our sanity, could someone please come up with a mod to get Dogmeat to heel, follow, or otherwise stay out of our way so we can move forward unimpeded? Doorways are the worst and you have to jump over him sometimes in order to proceed.
